In October, the Jackson Area Transportation Authority tweeted that it was providing free bus rides to passengers who vote.
The transit company tweeted: “The Jackson Area Transportation is providing free bus rides to passengers who get out and vote on Tuesday, November 3rd. Passengers wishing to ride the bus are required to show their voter registration cards while boarding the bus.”
The average cost per trip per passenger riding Jackson buses was $5.60 in 2019, according to a Federal Transit Administration database.
And bus fares accounted for 15.9% of total operating funds for the Jackson Transportation Authority in 2019.
The transit system took in $521,433 in bus fares in 2019 while local, state and federal tax dollars paid for the rest of the $4.3 million in operating expenses.
